Revising curricula
The main goals of the “Capabilities of a Smart Village” project include strengthening the skills and competencies of teachers and other educational staff of Elementary School “Mijat Stojanović” through educational activities and study trips, popularizing STEM aimed at children, young people and the general population, and encouraging active citizenship. For this purpose, after completing five training courses for teachers and conducting study visits in Croatia and abroad, the teachers, professional assistants and the principal of Elementary School “Mijat Stojanović” started revising three curricula of extracurricular activities: Young Technicians Club, Young Scientists Club and Volunteer Club.
What we want to achieve through the new curricula is to develop research competences based on scientific principles and responsibility when using the results in order to make conclusions and decisions related to everyday life, bearing in mind economic, political, ethical and moral perspectives, but also the consequences of our decisions, to develop technological and entrepreneurial way of thinking of students and the acquisition and practice of applying knowledge, connecting local communities with the school and civil society organizations in a joint network of stakeholders in order to encourage positive social changes in the field of volunteering and sustainable development and more.
The teachers and other educational staff of the school who participated in revising the curriculum set goals and designed interesting and purposeful activities.
Thus, the Volunteer Club will deal with the organization of humanitarian actions, maintenance of the school environment, will mark significant dates such as the International Day of Mutual Aid, the International Day of Human Solidarity, the International Day of Tolerance and others and other, older students will help the younger ones in learning, and cooperation is also planned with local associations and the Red Cross.
At the Young Scientists Club, students will connect science with everyday life through, for example, making soap and discovering what lays behind the taste and smell of Christmas, organizing STEAM days at school, lectures and cooperation with external collaborators and scientific institutions, and there will also be workshops for parents and for children attending DV “Regoč” in Babina Greda.
Students who attend the Young Technitians Club will learn to use 3D printers, master the 3D modeling programs Tinkercad and Blender, with which they will be able to independently create models for printing, and will also deal with programming LEGO robots. Together with the Club of Young Scientists, they will participate in the organization of the STEAM day.
The new curricula will be implemented next school year (2023/2024), and we believe that students will show interest in these extracurricular activities.
