Study visits in Croatia

After the study visit to the Kingdom of Norway and the Project partner Brundalen skole, the visits continued in the territory of the Republic of Croatia. Three of the planned four visits have been completed so far: on October 6, 2022, employees of the “Mijat Stojanović” Elementary School participated in the Go STEM fair at FERIT in Osijek, and on December 5, 2022, they visited the PISMO Incubator in Novska and the Institute for physics in Zagreb.

At the Go STEM fair, at the specialized workshop “Let’s start robots – LEGO mindstorms”, they had the opportunity to learn something about the basics of programming LEGO robots. Even the teachers who are not familiar with STEM subjects also found their way. In addition to the workshop, they had the opportunity to tour the rest of the fair and view the laboratories and equipment.

On Monday, December 5, 2022, school staff visited the PISMO Incubator in Novska, the first Croatian gaming incubator. As they say in the Incubator, this is a unique place where the love of video games becomes serious business. The participants of the “Capabilities of a smart village” project, together with the employees of the LOCUS Association from Vinkovci, had the opportunity to talk with video game creators, business startups and creatives and try out different VR simulators.

“I would definitely recommend a visit to this place to every fan of video games, but also to everyone who is interested in programming, art, creating and entertainment, because this is a place that combines all of the above and is really worth a visit!” said project manager Anja Čović Bilbija.

On the same day, the group visited the Institute of Physics in Zagreb, where, in addition to the scientists working at the Institute, they also had the opportunity to meet the teachers prof. Ines Dukić and prof. Marko Movre and students of the XV. gymnasium, better known as MIOC. The teachers and students of this school have been cooperating with the Institute for years, so gifted students have been able to collaborate with experts in the fields they are interested in and use professional equipment for their own research and experiments through various projects. Teachers and students presented the results of the project “A Star is Born”, on which they worked hard, and the current activities they are engaged in – photocatalysis and artificial intelligence. In addition to the above, under the leadership of ing. Berti Erjavec, teachers of Elementary School “Mijat Stojanović” visited modern laser and cryostat laboratories at the recently renovated Institute, where other experts explained their current tasks and projects. The laboratory for research of magnetic properties was presented by Dr. Mirta Herak, the cryogenic plant by Dr. Nikolina Novosel, the laboratory for laser plasmas was presented by assistant Rafaela Radičić, and the laboratory for ultrafast spectroscopy by Dr. Silvije Vdović.

Dr. Mario Rakić made several souvenirs as gifts for guests using a laser engraver.
